still wondering

still wondering

I found this post saved as a draft from December 2007.

chorus: When did you fall in love with me?
Was it out of the blue
‘Cause I swear I never knew it
When did you let your heart run free?
Have you been waiting long?
When did you fall in love with me?
When did you fall in love?

Make your way over here, sit down by this fool, and let’s rewind
C’mon, let’s go back and replay all our scenes
You can point out the hints, the clues, the twists and the smiles this time
All the ones that slipped by me
I bet my face is red, and you can hear my heart poundin’
Well I guess it don’t matter now that I realize
‘Cause baby I missed it then, but I can surely see you now
Right there before my eyes
You’re my beautiful surprise

chorus

Was it at the coffee shop
Or that morning at the bus stop
When [I] almost slipped, and [you] caught [my] hand
Or the time we built the snowman …
Or the night with the scary thunderstorm
I never saw the signs
Now we’ve got to make up for lost time
And I can tell now by the way that you’re looking at me
I’d better finish this song so my lips will be free
Have you been waiting long, when did you fall in love
I kept you waiting so long, when did you fall
Have you been waiting long
When did you fall in love with me
When did you fall in love?

I’m not sure if I would say Cincinnati is “the best city in the USA”, especially since some people rate it as the third poorest large city (pop. of 250,000+) in the nation.
There are some truly lovely parks, city squares, old homes and estates that could make you wish for a gardener, a maid and a butler. There are also some areas that send shivers down my spine. This is the city God has placed us in, though, and we are finding friends and making memories here.
John and I celebrated our anniversary (April 12) last weekend. His mom came over from Indianapolis to spend the afternoon with Emma, and John and I drove down to our old neighborhood. We parked and fed the meter, and then walked the old, old streets where I used to go jogging. We window shopped. We thoroughly enjoyed being out together, and I realized that I really missed living there. I even missed our first tiny apartment. I will probably also miss living where we do now when we move. Maybe not the neighborhood as much, but I knowI will look back at this apartment and the memories we made in it, and miss it, too.

quote to ponder, pictures after the storm

“By praying for our husbands and looking to the Lord rather than to our circumstances, we trust Him to carry both our husband and his burden. Then from the overflow of our hearts, we can give back to and encourage our men.” -shaunti feldhahn, For Women Only

quote to ponder

quote to ponder

“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.”
-anais nin

I saw this quote this morning across the top of my email account, and it reminded me of a conversation that John and I had last night. We were talking about ideas for the coming year and beyond – dreaming big and thinking outside the box – and John said, “but is my God too small for that? Rather, is my view of God too small?”

It is something that I need to keep learning, to see God as He is, not as who I would like Him to be, or who I think He is.
We will always have something more to learn about Him, about His character, and I need to be very, very, very careful not to “fashion an idol”, a god that I am comfortable with (Is. 44) but to let Him be. For He is great, He is awesome, and He is to be praised.

“Remember these things, O Jacob,
for you are my servant, O Israel.
I have made you, you are my servant;
O Israel, I will not forget you.
I have swept away your offenses like a cloud,
your sins like the morning mist.
Return to me,
for I have redeemed you.”
Sing for joy, O heavens, for the LORD has done this;
shout aloud, O earth beneath.
Burst into song, you mountains,
you forests and all your trees,
for the LORD has redeemed Jacob,
he displays his glory in Israel.
“This is what the LORD says—
your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb:
I am the LORD,
who has made all things,
who alone stretched out the heavens,
who spread out the earth by myself,
who foils the signs of false prophets
and makes fools of diviners,
who overthrows the learning of the wise
and turns it into nonsense,
who carries out the words of his servants
and fulfills the predictions of his messengers,
who says of Jerusalem, ‘It shall be inhabited,’
of the towns of Judah, ‘They shall be built,’
and of their ruins, ‘I will restore them,’
who says to the watery deep, ‘Be dry,
and I will dry up your streams,’
who says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd
and will accomplish all that I please;
he will say of Jerusalem, “Let it be rebuilt,”
and of the temple, “Let its foundations be laid.” ‘ -Is. 44:21-28

Baby update

Baby update

So, today the little pregnancy ticker reads, “40 weeks and 0 days pregnant”, which means that today we have officially reached our baby’s “due” date. And at this point, since the crib is still empty, it looks as if she just might be “late”.

In light of that, we scheduled an induction appointment at the hospital for the 26th, at 7 a. m. (ike! that sounds early!), and are praying that we don’t have to keep it. I am a little skittish about the whole idea of inducing labor, even though I know that if that is the way God wants our baby to be born, it will work out fine. I just would greatly prefer to go into labor naturally. Either way, though, His plan is perfect, He is sovereign, and He will take care of us. We are very eager to be able to finally hold her in our arms, and not just feel her through my tummy, but it felt so odd to be choosing her possible birthday!
Little One, we love you, and can hardly wait to see your little face!

Did you know that tulips smell like honey? I didn’t either, until John brought these home the other night. Their scent has been wafting by me pretty much all day long. A nice bit of spring when it’s 7 degrees outside.
Saturday morning in December

Saturday morning in December

This, plus reading Luke 3 and the weekend edition of NPR, has been my morning so far. Oh – I made some fudge, too. It was a good and cozy way to spend my snowy morning.

** evening update **

So, I put up my feet for a while and then got antsy, so I made pumpkin banana nut muffins and the dough for soft and spicy gingerbread cookies. And worked on the dishes that had piled up. :) After all of which my wonderful husband came home (to an apartment that smelled like heaven) and told me I needed to put my feet up again while he, tired though he was, got something together for dinner. I love that man.

I love fall. I love it almost as much as I love spring.

I love the intensity of color, how inviting it is to take an evening walk, the sound of the leaves as they crunch underfoot. I love the cooler weather, the crispness. I love how the grey days make me want to bake and clean. Or snuggle up with a blanket and a book.

I love fall.

Last Thursday John and I went to the Good Samaritan Hospital and had an ultrasound. We came home with the knowledge that our baby is healthy and GROWING and looks quite perfect. The baby is also a little wiggler! The nurse had a hard time getting all the images she needed, because the little one kept moving. :P

tropical storm Ike

tropical storm Ike

Yesterday the remnants of tropical storm Ike came through – sometimes at 60+ miles an hour (notice the shingles on the church lifting up)!

Ike promptly knocked out our electricity, so we had to improvise when it came to cooking dinner (and the headlamps from Anna came in VERY handy – thank you again!).
As the electricity was out, we had to do something else for dinner. The apartment complex does not allow BBQs, so … this was a surprisingly efficient substitute. The hot dogs actually got quite hot, and even had grill marks on them. :)
It even worked to boil water for tea this afternoon, and I was going to use the candles again for dinner tonight, but the power came back on just before I was going to light them. Bummer. (jk)

And today, to occupy myself with no electricity (a fun word to spell, by the way), I took random pictures of my tea, the apartment ……. You might get to see a few more later.
