a storybook themed baby shower, part 1

a storybook themed baby shower, part 1

A while back we had the privilege of welcoming a new nephew into the family, and we celebrated with a storybook themed baby shower! His mama loves reading, so we thought a party filled with children’s books would be a perfect way to welcome the little man to the world.
Babies and books – love them both! Since this was a storybook themed baby shower was for a baby boy, I used lots of neutrals (“vintagey” colors), whites and blues, and scattered stars and vintage books about liberally – and I think it all came together beautifully.DSC_0002We split up the hostessing duties a bit – I got to hostess at our home and provide the decor and drinks, my mother-in-law and sisters-in-law took care of the food.
A shower for a baby boy - with a storybook theme! Most of the decor were things that I either already had, we had in the shop and tweaked a little, free printable from Pinterest or that I made just for the occasion {children’s book page pinwheels and pennant “BABY” banner! And an adorable table runner from vintage children’s book pages, too – so cute.}A shower for a baby boy - with a storybook theme! We went with a simple color scheme – white, light {and a little dark} blue, kraft brown and vintage papers. The colors were a perfect backdrop for the children’s books, and played well together. :) I used a mix of vintage and new(er) linens, a variety of mixed metals and some wild grasses instead of of flowers. Stacks of vintage books (of course!) in brown and blues came into play, too.
A shower for a baby boy - with a storybook theme! I was delighted with how my table runner turned out! My mom has a knack for finding gorgeous old children’s books, some of which are sadly too worn to be enjoyed by our children. I used the pages with colored illustrations, arranged the pages a few times until I was happy with how the colors looked together, and secured them in placed with some double-sided tape. Super cute! I found several through Pinterest, and a few through a basic web search – all were free, and when placed in frames I already had, made a fun addition to the shower. And the new mama enjoyed keeping a few for the little guy, too!Framed book quotes for a shower for a baby boy - with a storybook theme! | the Path Less Traveled

Stay tuned for more party photos, including more decor, the super darling and delicious food (all storybook themed!) and the guest of honor!

You know the feeling when you realize you forgot to do something? Um, yeah …we had an amazing customer a while back who shared some gorgeous photos, and I completely forgot to share them with you. So …Chefs For Farmers!

BBQ Banquet in an industrial modern space

Chefs For Farmers is an organization that brings “chefs, artisans and culinary influencers together to celebrate supporting local and regional farmers”, and their event decorator contacted us at the last minute to see if we could help decorate their banquet – our answer? Yes, of course!BBQ Banquet for Chefs For Farmers

They were kicking off their season of celebrations, and needed lots of bunting style garlands to add drama and texture to their modern industrial style venue. The planner needed something that was classy but also rustic, and she decided to use our Vintage Book Triangle Garlands in extra long lengths to mix in with some cafe lighting and twinkle lights -the final result was amazing!modern industrial feteI love how the individual elements she used for the event – white cloths, wood chairs, flowers in glass bottles, kraft paper, string lights and bunting – are all so simple by themselves, but when they’re put together create a sense of refined, industrial drama. Gorgeous!

Chefs For Farmers kick-off dinner

The bunting style garlands are amazingly versatile, working in rustic and classic venues alike {and, because they aren’t event specific, they can be reused for other occasions!}.

Thank you to Chefs For Farmers for the photos – the event was such a feast for the eyes, and it looks like it was for the stomach as well! {more photos of the lovely event here}

Geometric Banners

Geometric Banners

If you’ve been following us on Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest you might have noticed this already, but we’ve been working hard to add some new items to the shop! I’ll let Olivia show you. :)

And now don’t you want your own (garland I mean, not baby girl ;D)?

We have these available in vintage map (some of you saw the preview here), vintage music, vintage book and colored cardstock (shown in white, but available in all colors). And we have them all available in the chair garland length, too!

I love how these can be customized almost endlessly, that they echo the current geometric-loving trend, and that they resemble the classic white fabric buntings (remember them from the village celebrations in Downtown Abby, anyone?) – there’s just so much to love about these! So far I’ve already used them as ceiling decorations and photo backdrops/props, and Emma Grace has requested a “triangle party” for her next birthday (she likes to plan her birthdays far in advance). Imagine how gorgeous a bunch of them would be at a wedding!

DSC_0076 For the Summer holidays – Memorial Day, Ian’s birthday, Flag Day, the 4th of July, etc. – I am decorating with lots of red, white and blue. {those balloon in the reflection? they’re left over from Ian’s party :)}

This vintage mirror lightens a corner in our dining area downstairs, and as I was decorating for our little guy’s birthday I decided to see if one of the Red, White and Blue Chair Banners would fit across it to add an additional pop of color – and look at that, it fit perfectly!

Use a chair garland to decorate a frame – this has been such a fun way to add some quick, seasonally appropriate, decor to my photo wall!

For Valentine’s Day I had the Red and White Heart Garland here, and as the spring holidays approached I switched it to this sweet Doily Garland. I find that they add a perfect touch of softness and unexpected color and am in love with this idea <3

sweet little things

sweet little things

I LOVE custom orders. Sometimes it’s a bit tricky to get the customer’s ideas transferred from “idea” to “reality”, but I always love them. Here’s a sweet little something that I was working on for a baby girl’s first birthday:

bright scallop garland from the Path Less Traveled

The baby girl’s mama contacted me with an idea board and a request for 6 3-foot long garlands, and we were both pretty tickled with how they turned out!

Do you have a vision or idea that you’d like to see created? Contact me and we’ll talk about it!

decorating for New Year’s Eve

decorating for New Year’s Eve

What are your plans for tonight? Staying up to welcome the New Year? Crashing early? Celebrating with loved ones, yummy munchies and board games? Snuggling up warm and watching a movie? Doing some online shopping of after Christmas sales (if so, don’t forget the coupon code for 15% off of the shop – maybe a good time to pick up the Garland for Every Holiday set?)? If you’re online, stop by the temporary landing page for our new website – still can hardly believe it’s actually happening! – and sign up for the newsletter so you can stay up to date on sales and things :)

Right now, crashing early sounds really good, but I’m looking forward to a fun evening with extended family, maybe a game or two and some delicious goodies. And enjoying watching it snow. :)

(one of the lovely bits of living in the midwest is having a snowy mailbox :D)

Have you seen the glittered votives making their way around Pinterest? I made some after seeing them and now think I need to make a few more – maybe in pinks and red for Valentine’s Day … :) These have been adding such a festive touch to our Christmas and New Year’s decorations!

The rest of our New Year’s decor is centered around our upstairs window. I recently found a small disco ball on Etsy (probably one of my most frivolous purchases yet :D) and combined it with a Snowflake Garland from the shop and a printable Happy New Year banner from theTomKatStudio.

Last year’s version of the same window (minus the disco ball) – I made up the twinkle star garland as a last minute way to add a bit of festivity to our house and it ended up going in the shop and becoming quite popular! Kind of fun to see how God uses some of my random ramblings and spurts of creative experimenting :)
I’m thinking that some large balloons (maybe like these) and twinkle lights would round this out nicely – maybe next year!

I’ve been reflecting back on 2012 for the past few days (and would enjoy making up a year-end round-up post here) and can only come to the conclusion that God is amazing. And, because He doesn’t change, that amazingness will continue in 2013.

Here’s to a wonder-ful new year!
