a storybook themed baby shower, part 1

a storybook themed baby shower, part 1

A while back we had the privilege of welcoming a new nephew into the family, and we celebrated with a storybook themed baby shower! His mama loves reading, so we thought a party filled with children’s books would be a perfect way to welcome the little man to the world.
Babies and books – love them both! Since this was a storybook themed baby shower was for a baby boy, I used lots of neutrals (“vintagey” colors), whites and blues, and scattered stars and vintage books about liberally – and I think it all came together beautifully.DSC_0002We split up the hostessing duties a bit – I got to hostess at our home and provide the decor and drinks, my mother-in-law and sisters-in-law took care of the food.
A shower for a baby boy - with a storybook theme! Most of the decor were things that I either already had, we had in the shop and tweaked a little, free printable from Pinterest or that I made just for the occasion {children’s book page pinwheels and pennant “BABY” banner! And an adorable table runner from vintage children’s book pages, too – so cute.}A shower for a baby boy - with a storybook theme! We went with a simple color scheme – white, light {and a little dark} blue, kraft brown and vintage papers. The colors were a perfect backdrop for the children’s books, and played well together. :) I used a mix of vintage and new(er) linens, a variety of mixed metals and some wild grasses instead of of flowers. Stacks of vintage books (of course!) in brown and blues came into play, too.
A shower for a baby boy - with a storybook theme! I was delighted with how my table runner turned out! My mom has a knack for finding gorgeous old children’s books, some of which are sadly too worn to be enjoyed by our children. I used the pages with colored illustrations, arranged the pages a few times until I was happy with how the colors looked together, and secured them in placed with some double-sided tape. Super cute! I found several through Pinterest, and a few through a basic web search – all were free, and when placed in frames I already had, made a fun addition to the shower. And the new mama enjoyed keeping a few for the little guy, too!Framed book quotes for a shower for a baby boy - with a storybook theme! | the Path Less Traveled

Stay tuned for more party photos, including more decor, the super darling and delicious food (all storybook themed!) and the guest of honor!

customer love – a gorgeous baby shower for twins!

A few months back I was contacted by a woman who was throwing a baby shower for her friend who was having twins {a boy and a girl!}. She wanted the colors to be gender neutral {but not boring}, and our Navy, Mint, Coral, Cream and Gold Confetti Garland caught her eye. She loved the colors, and had a few ideas of other things to add to round out the decor she had in mind. But first Andrea had one important request – the decorations had to be in Texas by the following Saturday. Wow-ee! I was in love with the idea, though, and we made it happen. :)Navy, Mint, Coral and Gold Pinwheels on the Path Less Traveled Andrea wanted a bunch of paper pinwheels in a variety of sizes, and in colors to coordinate with the garland. I had been wanting to make some for a while {have you seen the pins of some of the lovely pinwheels floating around Pinterest? So, I have this plan to make Emma Grace and Ian each something gray that will coordinate with the hat that I made for Baby, thinking ahead to maybe some Thanksgiving or Christmas sibling photos (with them all wearing some version of a mama-made!). Em’s has yet to be made up, but I did get Ian’s done! Yay! And then I tried it on him …..

It looks perfect! Like it should fit with no problem, right?
Yeah, right. I used Petite Purls’ Sleeveless top pattern, which I love, but had changed it up with the addition of some ribbed stripes. The final result was a lovely vest that was just a bit long (which I was going for – the little guy is growing so fast and I wanted it to fit until Easter!), but about a size too narrow. Oops!

Oh well. Next step, unravel it and try again. : )

I know I’ll get it right soon!

pretties from the bloggy world

pretties from the bloggy world

Have you seen my “featured on” page recently? I’ve just updated it with a few of the lovely blogs that have featured some of my items or events that used items from the shop (seriously gorgeous events!).

Here’s a sampling:
Style Me Pretty has had a few different posts with things from the shop:

A gorgeous wedding that they featured last October where the bride requested some extra large hearts garlands in book pages to warm up the back wall of the church.

A wedding in Ireland where the couple used  some of the Romantic Vintage Heart garlands in the backdrop for their cake table. So sweet!

A New York Valentine wedding. The event planner did a custom request for chair garlands, and they became so popular that I have since added them to the shop!

And an Australian engagement session where the couple used the Romantic Vintage Hearts garland as one of their props – their photos were stunning!

The baby blog On To Baby featured one of the sweetest baby showers I’ve seen, and it just so happened that the girl who threw it, Mona of Birds and Honey, had asked me to make her some custom “It’s a Boy!” cupcake toppers for it (another item that has become so popular that I’ve added them to the shop!). They were just darling and really complemented the rest of the shower decor.

Anyway, those are just a few! Aren’t they gorgeous? Every time I see photos of where people have used my products I am amazed at how sweet they turn out and how they fit into different settings so well. If you have photos of an event where you’ve used some of my creations, I’d love to see them! And if I’m able to use them here on the blog or on facebook, I’ll send you a coupon for your next order!

little boy’s party, part 1 – party prep

little boy’s party, part 1 – party prep

so, back in June our little guy turned 2 and we celebrated with a cowboy party (and it totally fit his interests right now!).
Here is belated re-cap of the decor and party, so you can enjoy the fun too!

Ian is really excited about cowboys right now (Roy Rogers, guns and anything that he thinks can be turned into a gun, horses, cowboy hats, “bad guys” … you name it!), so we decided to throw a cowboy themed party. You can see a bunch of the things I pinned as inspiration on his party Pinterest board (who’d have thought when he was born 2 years ago that we’d say such things?!).

A few days before the party John brought home some large sheets of carboard that we (John) cut into 4 large circles and several cactus shapes. The circles got wagon wheels drawn on them and on the day of the party got fastened to the sides of a folding table to make a “chuck wagon” serving table.

The birthday boy loved “helping” – actually, he loved directing what we should do and then dancing on the cardboard cut-outs!

John took the cactus outside and spray painted them dark green, and I got busy making some paper stars … and I’ll post about the actual party later!

my creative space today: sewing for baby

my creative space today: sewing for baby

We had a new nephew show up a few nights ago (so proud of you Leah! and so looking forward to meeting the little guy!) and so yesterday I quickly pulled out the material that I had stashed to make his blanket. :)

The blanket is brown minky on one side and a JoAnn’s print on the other. I used the Scallop Baby Blanket pattern from Bend-the-Rules Sewing (such a fun book – if you haven’t thumbed through it yet I highly recommend it!).

Brett’s blanket is coming together quickly – now all I need to do is run it through the wash to get all the extra fuzz off and wrap it up for the little guy. :)

sewing for babies

Babies seem to be popping up all over this year (what joy!). It seems that every week I hear of someone else who is having a baby. :)
Our family circle is adding two – John’s brothers are each having a boy. Emma and Ian are getting their first cousins this Spring! Of course, I have been itching to do some sewing for our new little nephews. :)

One of the things that was on my “Ideas” page was this tutorial for embellished burp cloths on Diary of a Quilter.  I (kind of) followed it to make a set for each new nephew:

burp cloths for baby Owen, whose nursery is animal themed with bright colors

burp cloths for baby Brett, whose nursery is elephant themed with pale greens and blues

Each baby is also getting some of Ikea’s wooden child size hangers. I bought some when we were expecting Emma Grace and have loved them ever since! They are really classic feeling – and they never break (a huge plus!). One of the last things I did before we left Cincinnati was to stop by Ikea and buy some for each baby (and their mommies). :)

There are a few days left to enter to win the CSN Stores gift card. If you haven’t yet I highly recommend it!

Ian’s Hat and Sweater

Ian’s Hat and Sweater

A few days back I mentioned that I finished making the hat and sweater that I had started for the Kids’ Clothes Week Challenge. So, here’s the promised post (albeit a few days later than I had planned :)).

I made both the sweater and the hat using Caron Country Merino Blend in “Silver Service” on size 6 needles. The patterns for both are from Simple Knits for Cherished Babies by Erika Knight.
Although Ian is only five 5 months old, he is a, ahem, large baby (routinely weighing and measuring in the 98th-100th percentile), so I made the Classic Cashmere Sweater in the 6-9 month size and did the math to increase the Baby’s Beanie Hat to a 12 month size. They both fit!

A few things about the sweater pattern – the sleeves are made to be rolled up, so are an inch to inch and a half longer than regular sleeves. If you would prefer to have regular sleeves you would need to do the math to figure out how many rows to leave off.
The sweater pattern includes a few rows of garter stitch at the bottom hem to prevent rolling, and it really works! I’ve put the sweater through the wash 3 or 4 times since I finished knitting it on Halloween, and it still looks like new. No need to iron down the hem. :)

I love how the gray looks on him. So classic, so boyish, so him.

A little bit random

A little bit random

Did you know that Blogger has a statistics feature that allows you to, well, see your blogs statistics? It’s pretty cool. There are some days where there have been a few hundred people stopping by. Pretty cool.

And, did you know that when I don’t post anything here for a few days, I get a lot less people stopping by? Who’d have thought. I mean really, who wouldn’t want to read the same posts over and over? ;)

So, for those of you who like to read new things, here’s a new, albeit slightly random, post.

Lately I’ve been working hard on finishing up some of the projects that I’ve been meaning to get to, getting Etsy orders out (thank you again to the lovely people who have been placing those orders!) and keeping the apartment warm with baking (our apartment manager is finally getting the heat going this week).

The projects that I’ve finished include Ian’s hat and matching sweater (I’m planning an an entire post about the set),

a lined pair of pants for him,

a coordinating skirt and pair of pants for the two of them,

and a set of matching lined jammie pants for Em and Ian to wear this winter.

And John went hunting.

So, progress is being made! It’s so good to see the fabric pile in our bedroom shrinking a little (and I know John appreciates that a LOT).

I’m linking this to a few of these bloggy get-togethers. There are some amazing Thanksgiving and Christmas ideas and tutorials being posted!

And be sure to enter the CSN Stores giftcard giveaway. :)

I did it!

I did it!

You know the “Ideas” page on the blog? And how it’s getting rather, well, long?

Well, I finally made something from it!
I found the Heirloom Cut Chenille Baby Blanket on Aesthetic Nest a while ago and immediately knew that I needed to make one – or maybe more? – for my little ones.

It took me what seemed like forever (Ian has learned to sense when I’m sitting down at the machine and then decides that he needs to eat right NOW and that the blanket can wait!), but it’s finally done!

I used cotton seam binding instead of the satin blanket edging that she recommended since I wanted the whole thing to be 100% cotton, and I really, really love it. The “flat” side of the blanket is a light moss green with cream dots, and the chenille side is made of light green, yellow and cream. I’ve washed it a few times since it’s been finished (it is getting used!) and it gets a little softer each time.

Can I say again that I just love this blanket?

I’m linking to a few of these great craft blogs – head over and check out the creative ideas!
